Music is My Friend - Part One
Dear Esteemed Readers,
Most of my friends here in the lively, central Washington, small town of Tieton know me as a visual artist and the writer of this Art Nun of Central Washington journal. But what is less well-known is that since early childhood, music and dance have also been constant, comforting companions that have expanded and enriched my life over many years, in ways I could never have predicted. As an adult, I’ve followed a mostly unconventional and self-directed educational path not only as a visual artist, but also as a dedicated researcher, performer, and supporter of music—in all its multifaceted and iridescent forms.
Recently, another opportunity for sharing the diverse music I love with a wider audience has come into focus at the perfect time. Thanks to the volunteer efforts of local residents who have combined their skills working with both technology and music, in May of 2026, our small town launched its own community-powered radio station: “Tieton Radio.” Listeners worldwide can now stream an eclectic, multilingual mix of diverse and locally-produced programs 24/7. Local beneficiaries include our region’s farmers, long-time residents, immigrants, artists, and urban newcomers—but can also include anyone who may be seeking more wide-ranging and adventuresome programming.

This summer, I’ll be continuing my ongoing musical collaborations with my musician husband David Bilides, as we research and compile a variety of playlists for his “Music from Everywhere” program on Tieton Radio. With contributions arriving from both of our musical backgrounds, the final playlists always illuminate the beauty and diversity of music cultures throughout the world.
Recent programs have included contemporary and traditional music from Mali, Turkey, and Ireland. You can check the program schedule on the radio website for times and descriptions of shows.
And “stay tuned” for more detailed stories of my kaleidoscopic musical background and adventures in upcoming posts.
With all best wishes for more expansive listening,
Sandra Dean, Visual Artist
